Taiwan
Taiwan has few peers when it comes to comparing the variety and prevalence of bamboo throughout the country. Bamboo is highly valued not only for its esthetic qualities, but also for its utilitarian nature and its renewability as a resource.
Bamboo is fiendishly difficult to photograph well. It grows in dense stands and creates a forest of deep, impenetrable darkness. Usually, it is only possible to appreciate bamboo's form when a few plants are isolated from a stand-- which does not occur that often in the wild.
New bamboo photographs can be found on the bamboo ii page.

As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them.
~John F. Kennedy
Having spent the past two Thanksgiving holidays in Asia, I was determined to be home this year instead. Thanksgiving is not celebrated in Japan or China (unless you happen to count the menu choices
at an international hotel
as such.) For me, Thanksgiving is an important holiday not only because it has largely managed to avoid the trappings of commercialism, but because its foundations and meaning are so important-- even profound. It is easy to fall into the trap of pursuing more, more and yet more. Paradoxically, this behavior often precludes appreciating and actively enjoying what we have. How often do we take stock of our bountiful lives and give thanks for it?
On this Thanksgiving I want to express my deepest appreciation for all of you; my readers, my supporters, my clients, my colleagues, the staff at Interlink (Tak! Saori! Maree!) and to my friends and family. I could not do what I love without you. Thank you! You are very much appreciated! Have a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday!
